What is Cool Peel CO2 Laser?
CoolPeel is an advanced laser skin resurfacing treatment that utilizes the SmartXide Tetra CO2 laser by Deka. This fractional ablative treatment targets fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, large pores, uneven skin tone, rough texture, age spots, and other signs of sun damage, all while minimizing thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. This allows for a faster recovery compared to traditional ablative treatments.
Because CoolPeel’s heat doesn’t penetrate as deeply as a traditional CO2 laser, it isn’t powerful enough to treat more severe signs of aging, like deep wrinkles, in a single session. However, it offers many of the benefits of traditional CO2 laser treatments with minimal downtime. CoolPeel is often used for full-face treatments and to address fine lines and wrinkles on the hands, neck, and chest.
Pros and Cons of Cool Peel
Pros:
-
Quick Treatment: A CoolPeel session takes only about 15 minutes.
-
Comfortable: With the application of topical numbing cream, CoolPeel is more comfortable than typical CO2 resurfacing treatments.
-
Minimal Downtime: Expect only two days of redness, compared to 1-2 weeks of recovery after traditional CO2 treatments.
-
Visible Results: Significant improvements are typically seen within 7 to 10 days, with further results as collagen continues to form. The laser’s power can be adjusted to suit your skin type and concerns.
Cons:
-
Temporary Side Effects: You may experience sunburn-like redness and dry, scaly skin for a day or two post-treatment.
-
Provider Expertise Required: The SmartXide Tetra CO2 laser’s adjustable settings may increase the risk of user error, making it important to choose a provider with extensive laser experience.
-
Potential for Cold Sores: All laser treatments may trigger cold sores, so it’s advisable to consult your provider for antiviral medication if this is a concern.
-
Risk of Hyperpigmentation: Those with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI (light brown to deeply pigmented skin tones) may be at a higher risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Discuss your candidacy with your provider.
How Does Cool Peel work?
CoolPeel uses a CO2 laser to renew the skin by quickly heating water molecules in the deeper layers, triggering the body’s natural healing response and stimulating collagen production. Unlike most ablative lasers, which remove the outer layer of skin and usually require longer recovery, CoolPeel uses high energy in short pulses to create controlled injury to the dermis, leaving less heat in the surrounding tissue—hence the name "CoolPeel."
This results in less flaking, peeling, and swelling after treatment. The SmartXide Tetra CO2 laser allows providers to tailor the power and pulse size to match your skin concerns and age, ensuring a customized approach. The customizable pulse also allows for precise treatment of smaller areas, such as around the eyes.
Additionally, CoolPeel’s unique “spray” pattern reduces treatment time, taking only 5 to 15 minutes for a full-face treatment, compared to the hours required for traditional ablative lasers.
Some providers may recommend combining CoolPeel with radiofrequency microneedling treatments, like Virtue RF, to further enhance collagen formation and promote the creation of new, healthy skin cells.
What can you expect after treatment?
After your CoolPeel treatment, you can resume your normal activities right away. However, your skin may appear inflamed, dry, and flaky for a few days. It’s important to keep your skincare routine simple and gentle during recovery. Use a mild cleanser and a hydrating moisturizer, and follow any additional post-care instructions provided by your provider.
Given your skin’s increased sensitivity, it’s crucial to avoid direct sun exposure and protect your skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) throughout the recovery period.
